deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage is a technique that is used to treat chronic muscle tension through slow strokes and direct deep pressure or friction.These enable the deeper layers of muscles which may have scar tissue, adhesions or chronic tension to be worked on directly, helping to break up and eliminate any scar tissue or tension.It is an excellent massage to help get rid of deep rooted knots especially in the neck and shoulders. You may notice some soreness during or right after the massage, however, you should feel better than ever after a day or two.Deep Tissue Massage helps to loosen tight muscles, improve circulation of blood and oxygen, and releases toxins from the muscles. Due to the release of toxins you will need to increase the amount of water that you drink, encouraging the release of toxins from your system.Who would benefit from deep tissue massage?Whether you work in an office and find that you have lots of tension in your neck and shoulders, youre a mum who carries children and heavy shopping, someone who is training for a sporting event, someone who carries heavy equipment as part of their job (e.g. a camera man/woman), or someone who has bad posture you will find that you will benefit from deep tissue massage.Your first Deep Tissue Massage treatment will include an initial consultation where I will take your medical history, look at your diet and lifestyle, all of these will enable me to create a treatment which will best suit you.Some of the many benefits:
* Improves circulation
* Relaxes and releases tense muscles
* Eliminates toxins and waste
* Encourages deeper and more relaxed breathing
* Improves digestion
* Aids relaxation
* Reduces stress, tension and anxiety levels
* Improves quality of sleep
------A Deep Tissue Massage last for 60 minutes and costs £50.Donna offers deep tissue massage at her own treatment room in Ballycastle.

reflexology

Reflexology is increasing in popularity worldwide, this is due to its extraordinary effectiveness in maintaining good health as well as relieving all forms of physical and mental discomfort.Its far reaching effects stem from the deep state of relaxation that creates space for the mind, body and soul to heal themselves.The whole body can be mapped out onto the feet. Each part of the body corresponds with an area of the foot, these areas are called reflexes. By working on these reflexes we can affect the corresponding areas of the body, bringing the body back into balance, encouraging the body to heal itself.You will remain fully clothed during this treatment with only your feet uncovered while laying on a treatment couch. Reflexology treatments last approximately one hour and usually about six weekly sessions are recommended for optimum results.Thereafter a session once or twice a month will help maintain balance within the body.Some of the many benefits of Reflexology:
* Increases circulation
* Aids relaxation
* Allows specific areas of the body to be worked on indirectly
* Eliminates toxins and waste
* Reduces stress levels
* Rebalances hormones
* Can improve quality of sleep

A Reflexology treatment lasts for 60 minutes and costs £35.

hot stone massage

Hot stone massage uses soothing oils, warm basalt and sometimes cold stones to relax your muscles, allowing for a deeper and more intense all-over massage.In hot stone therapy, Donna applies smooth, water-heated basalt stones to key points on your body. This direct heat relaxes your muscles, which means that the massage itself is more effective and intense than it would be otherwise. The size of the stones varies, according to which part of the body your therapist is treating.The combination of relaxing warmth and refreshing coolness is thought to encourage the body to detox and heal, increasing lymph flow and helping to flush out waste. With the addition of heat, your body becomes relaxed in a much shorter space of time, and your therapist can focus on a deep working of the tissues using both the stones and her hand strokes.The stones are coated in fragrant oil to increase your sense of relaxation and calm. Oil is smoothed gently onto your body, and each stone in turn is worked by your therapist’s hands.Hot stone massage can:
boost your circulation
release stored tension
recharge your energy levels
relax you.
Hot stone massage is said to have health benefits for people with:
muscular pain
poor circulation
rheumatic and arthritic conditions
fibromyalgia
back pain
stress
insomnia
depression.As with all spa therapies, though, never underestimate the feel-good factor. Hot stone massage will make you feel nurtured, pampered and special.Before your treatment begins, tell your therapist about any medical conditions you have. Share anything significant, as your therapist will take your medical history into account when choosing the right stones and techniques for your body. For similar reasons, tell your therapist if you are, or think you might be, pregnant.What to expect from hot stone massageYou’re in for a treat, so indulge as much as you can. Arrive early so you have time enough to relax and absorb your surroundings. Your treatment is likely to last about an hour; plenty of time for melting away all your knots, aches and worries. It’s not a good idea to eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol in the hours running up to your hot stone therapy.You won’t be able to wear much for this treatment. It’s usually fine to wear bikini bottoms or knickers during this massage and – worry not – your therapist will be highly skilled at preserving your modesty with strategically-placed towels.You’ll undress and lie down in private, while your therapist waits outside. When you’re ready, she will place the warm, oiled stones on many different around your body, perhaps even tiny ones between each of your toes. As you relax, you may start drifting off into a dreamy state and stop counting or noticing where the stones are being arranged.Donna will use a variety of strokes and techniques to massage you, working the stones and her hands over the kinks in your muscles. The massage may be quite strong, although you are unlikely to feel the intensity since your muscles will be relaxed by the stones.Donna may alternate between hot and cold stones. As your body sinks further into a state of relaxation, you may even stop noticing the extreme changes in temperature.You will probably feel deeply relaxed, blissed-out and meditative after your massage. Some people have reported closing their eyes and seeing bright colours. Enjoy the afterglow, float slowly back to the real world and re-hydrate your body by sipping plenty of water.

warm bamboo massage

Warm Bamboo Massage is a traditional Chinese practice that allows the therapist to provide a deeper and firmer massage than may be possible with hands alone.It is said to have originated in South East Asia when a therapist noticed one monkey rubbing another’s back with a stick!Warm Bamboo Massage is a table massage where the therapist uses warmed bamboo tools of varying lengths and diameter to roll, knead and relax muscles with deep tissue techniques and is beneficial in that it brings about increased circulation, relief of sore muscles and a deep state of relaxation.It is regarded as a body and limb massage that incorporates bamboo stalks of varying lengths and diameters to provide drainage, relaxation and reshaping, simultaneously. Bamboo symbolizes suppleness and resilience, straightforwardness and simplicity; and the massage satisfies two major needs: relaxation and well-being.The Benefits of treatment include:* Increased circulation due to more surface contact
* More pressure can be evenly administered to the client‘s body
* Pressure is effectively maintained for longer periods of time
* Effective deep tissue work can be done in a shorter amount of time
* Allows pain free deep tissue work for bodies with lots of hair
* Aids relaxation
* Eases muscles aches and pains
How does Bamboo massage work?It allows the therapist to utilise gravity-assisted leverage with bamboo tools using their own body weight, while the bamboo tools combined with a special oil, glide over the contours of the client’s body to give a well-needed deep tissue massage. The warmth of the sticks relaxes the body, melting away all the cares of the world as the heat penetrates the deeper layers of the skin surface, increasing circulation, relief of sore muscles, and a deep state of relaxation.
What does Bamboo massage feel like?This massage is very warming, relaxing and feels exquisite. It brings about an increased circulation, relief of sore muscles and deep relaxation. Clients who prefer to receive a deep tissue and sports massage will love this treatment, as this massage is great for the relief of overused and muscle soreness incurred in all sports and in professions that build up stress.

reiki

Just for today do not worry…. Just for today do not anger…. Honor your parents, Teachers and Elders…. Earn your living honestly…. Show gratitude to every living thingThe word Reiki is Japanese and means universal life energy (an energy which is all around us).Reiki is a deeply relaxing healing energy therapy which uses hands-on or hands off healing. When healing energy flows freely through us we are well and happy in a state of balance. When we have blockages in our energy or we are off balance we feel ill, stressed, run down, etc. It is important to ensure that the bodys energy is balanced as stress is a major cause of many illnesses.Reiki treats the person as a whole, rather than treating a specific condition, getting to the root of the problem which may be unknown.Reiki is a highly intelligent energy, it knows where and how it is needed and works as necessary, it flows to areas that are imbalanced or blocked, helping the bodys natural ability to heal itself while helping to reduce any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing.Reiki can be used to treat emotional, physical, mental or energetic issues.Some clients come for treatments as they have a specific illness that would benefit from the healing energy of Reiki, other clients come for treatments because they find the experience very relaxing and can see the benefits of relaxation while receiving healing energy, others come as they may be at a crossroad and find that receiving Reiki helps them to clear their mind making decisions easier. You dont need to have a specific reason for having a treatment, anyone can enjoy the healing energy of Reiki!What happens during a reiki treatment?I will go through a consultation with you before your treatment, this will involve a short medical history, I will then give you an explanation as to what happens during a treatment. You will lay on a treatment couch whilst fully clothed during this treatment, although I will ask you to remove any shoes or glasses you may be wearing to ensure your comfort.There is no massage or manipulation during a Reiki treatment. My hands will be placed just above your body or gently on your body, you may find that during the treatment you notice heat coming from my hands, you may notice tingling, throbbing, coolness or other sensations, although some people find that they dont notice anything during a treatment. Everyone is different and every treatment is different.How will I feel after the reiki treatment?Most people find that they feel very relaxed and peaceful following a Reiki treatment. Some people find that they feel energised, while others feel tired. Reiki sometimes stirs up emotions as part of the healing process. Occasionally people notice that following a treatment they have a headache or feel as though they have a mild cold, this is part of their healing process.Some of the many benefits:
* Encourages relaxation, giving the body time to begin healing itself
* Reduces stress levels
* Aids better sleep
* Helps spiritual growth and emotional clearing
* Supports the immune system
* Helps rebalance and address any emotions that can result in physical dis-ease
* Raises the vibrational frequency of the body

aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment which uses the natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to maintain and improve the health of the mind, body and spirit.
Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils medicinally to improve the health of the body, mind, and spirit and aims to assist the body’s natural abilities to heal, rest and recover from stress and illness.Each essential oil contains the active ingredients of a plant and has it’s own therapeutic properties that have been proven by use through the ages and can be used to treat a wide range of ailments.
The inhaled aroma from these “essential” oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. The inhaled aroma from these “essential” oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function.
Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing.How long has aromatherapy been around?
Humans have used aromatherapy for thousands of years and research into its uses continues to grow. Throughout time, people have used essential oils and plant matter to try to heal illnesses and cure diseases.
The term “aromatherapy” was coined by a French perfumer and chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in a book he wrote on the topic that was published in 1937.This renowned French chemist Renee Maurice Gattefosse had dedicated his life to research and study regarding the healing properties of essential oils.How does aromatherapy treatment work?
Aromatherapy typically works in two different ways, through sense of smell and through skin absorption. There are nearly one hundred types of essential oils available. Generally, people use the most popular oils.
Let’s look at skin absorption first; many essential oils contain anti-inflammatory properties and may be applied to the skin to fight infection or relieve pain.When essential oils are applied to the body they penetrate the skin via the hair follicles and sweat glands and are absorbed into the body fluids, where they not only help to kill bacteria and viruses but also stimulate the body’s immune system, thereby strengthening resistance to further attack.During a massage, essential oils are added to a carrier oil to dilute the mixture and massaged into the skin. An aromatherapy massage usually lasts between one hour and 90 minutes. The oils used will be tailored to suit your specific requirements.
Aromatherapy Massage is one of the best ways to enjoy aromatherapy because you not only receive the therapeutic properties of the essential oils, but you also get the wonderful benefits of the massage itself. The therapeutic action of the essential oils when brought together with the revitalising effects of massage stimulate all of the organs in the body, plus the skin, muscles, nerves and glands.Aromatherapy has an array of benefits.Helps manage pain
It can improve sleep quality
Reduce Nausea
Reduce pain and body aches
Stimulates the body’s immune system, protecting itself from illness.
Treat headaches and migraines
Help ease Menstrual problems
Menopausal problems
Improve digestion
Encourages lymphatic drainage, helping to reduce fluid and toxin build-up.Some types of psoriasis may find relief with aromatherapy, but a healthcare professional should advise about use and application.Is it safe?
Provided they are used correctly, essential oils are safe to use. The oils should never be swallowed or massaged into broken skin.Like medications, essential oils must be treated with respect. It is important to seek professional advice and to follow instructions carefully.

ear candles

Thermo-Auricular Therapy (also known as Hopi Ear Candles) is a pleasant and non-invasive treatment of the ears, used to treat a variety of conditions.These ear candles induce a revitalising heat upon the head and ears, which soothes, relieves and relaxes.A Brief History of Hopi Ear CandlesThis is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations. It is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, initially probably for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a purely physical basis. However, the practice reached the modern world via the native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona (its interesting to note that Hopi means peaceful people).Ear candles were used traditionally by Shamen healers. Ancient wall paintings show their importance in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies of the tribe. The candles are still made today on the basis of the old traditional formula originating from the Hopi Indians.How do Hopi Ear Candles work?The candles are made from the natural ingredients of beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St Johns Wort, chamomile, beta-carotene and organically grown flax. A constant high quality is ensured. The candles work on a chimney principle, drawing any impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed. They equalise the pressure in the head and ears, making them suitable for most conditions. Secretion flow is gently stimulated and the vapour collects and removes impurities or deposits. Most of these are carried away through the candle chimney, although some of them can be found in the condensed candle wax residue after removal from the ear, or could even work their way up to the surface 24-48 hours after.To enhance the benefits, after the candles have been administered, I provide a face and neck massage.The ear candles and massage can provide the following benefits :
* Soothe irritated areas
* Stimulate peripheral blood circulation
* Strengthen your immune system
* Strengthen the work of the lymphatic system
* Stimulate energy points on the external ear
* Can help with irritation in ears and sinuses
* Pressure regulation in cases of : sinusitis / rhinitis / glue ear / colds / flu / headaches / migraine

myofascial release

Myofascial Release is a highly specialized stretching technique used by physical therapists to treat patients with a variety of soft tissue problems.
To understand what Myofascial Release is and why it works, you have to understand a little about fascia. Fascia is a thin tissue that covers all the organs of the body. This tissue covers every muscle and every fiber within each muscle. All muscle stretching, then, is actually stretching of the fascia and the muscle, the myofascial unit. When muscle fibers are injured, the fibers and the fascia which surrounds it become short and tight. This uneven stress can be transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body, causing pain and a variety of other symptoms in areas you often wouldn’t expect. Myofascial Release treats these symptoms by releasing the uneven tightness in injured fascia.In other words, Myofascial Release is stretching of the fascia. Small areas of muscle are stretched at a time. Sometimes the therapist uses only two fingers to stretch a small part of a muscle.Each Myofascial Release technique contains the same components. The physical therapist finds the area of tightness. A light stretch is applied to the tight area. The physical therapist waits for the tissue to relax and then increases the stretch. The process is repeated until the area is fully relaxed. Then, the next area is stretched.
The therapist will be able to find sore spots just by feel. Often, patients are unable to pinpoint some sore spots or have grown used to them until the physical therapist finds them. The size and sensitivity of these sore spots, called Myofascial Trigger Points, will decrease with treatment.
Most patients are surprised by how gentle Myofascial Release is. Some patients fall asleep during treatment. Others later go home and take a nap. Most patients find Myofascial Release to be a very relaxing form of treatment.Myofascial Release is not massage. Myofascial Release is used to equalize muscle tension throughout the body. Unequal muscle tension can compress nerves and muscles causing pain. Progress is measured by a decrease in the patient’s pain and by an improvement in overall posture.Who Can Benefit
Back strain, chronic back pain, low back pain, thoracic back pain
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Complex pain complaints
Fibromyalgia
Fibrositis
Headache
Trigger points, tender points *
Whiplash
* Trigger Points and tender points cause different types of pain. For example, a Trigger Point in the neck muscles can cause headaches, the sensation of your throat closing or eye pain. Pressure on a Trigger Point causes increased pain at the site and radiating pain in other apparently unrelated parts of the body. Pressure on a tender point causes increased pain only at the tender point itself.

“Excellence guaranteed every time!! Whatever treatment you choose you will be sure of complete satisfaction, every time, delivered in a professional, relaxing atmosphere. There are a variety of treatments to choose from - you will be spoiled for choice - I know I always am!!!"
- Jill McCook, Ballycastle
“I was involved in a car accident about ten years ago and since that time, I have suffered with crippling back pain. I have been to countless physios and chiropractors over the years, none of which have been able to help me much. However,since having regular weekly massages with Donna, I can honestly say that I'm now able to live a virtually pain-free life and can do all the normal things in life, such as play with my daughter, that I was previously unable to do! - I really can't recommend her highly enough - thanks again Donna!"
- Matt Harper - Ballymoney
“Donna has been my masseuse for 8 years and significantly improved the muscular pain in my back through her regular visits"
- Angela Schroeder, Oxted, Surrey
“I first came across Donna at Healing Hands when I was six months pregnant, about three years ago. I was suffering with lower back pain and hoped that a relaxing massage may be able to help me. I asked around my friends and searched on the web and only one name kept coming up - Donna's."
“Thank God!! -She literally changed my whole life, whilst I was pregnant, transforming it from something that I had to endure, to a time that I was now able to thoroughly enjoy. Since then, I have continued with deep-tissue massages on a regular basis and this has allowed me to sleep like a baby and genuinely given me a feeling of my body, literally feeling younger than it has for years! - Don't be mistaken, this is no relaxing spa type massage (although I'm sure she can do that), Donna provides me, with an intense deep-tissue sports massage, that at times can be quite painful (I've sworn at her more than once!), however it's worth the pain and I can always feel the positive effects for 4/5 days afterwards.I've never left a review before and have to admit that I was slightly hesitant at first to add such an amazingly, positive review, as I'm only too aware how popular Donna is and fear that I may struggle to get booked for my regular treatments in the future!! So in conclusion :
(a) yes her treatments are amazing!! : )
(b) please don't take my bookings : (

“I suffered from a bad stroke it left me with a left side weakness, I have tried several types of treatments then I went to Donna a year or so ago and haven't looked back since. She recommended Reflexology so with her bubbly personality and good hands I found myself in a relaxing atmosphere as pain and weaknesses eased by the end of the session, her knowledge is without question is as good as it gets, as she let's you know which part of the foot is connected to which part of the body, and keeps you informed to anything new in treatments that could help"

Is reflexology safe if I am pregnant?
Yes, but it is recommended that you avoid treatments during the first 12 weeks, when your body is adjusting to hormonal changes. This also applies to Indian head massage and Thai foot massage.After 12 weeks, expectant mothers often find reflexology extremely helpful in coping with morning sickness, tiredness and common ailments associated with pregnancy.
Is reflexology safe for children and the elderly?
Yes. Even newborn babies respond well to reflexology. With young children and the elderly, a treatment is often shorter and pressure is lighter. We assess each client individually to establish the right degree of treatment.Mothers can now learn to give their babies reflexology treatment themselves, which Donna would be happy to discuss with you.pregnancy.
Is reflexology safe for the terminally ill?
Yes. Reflexology can do no harm, only good. In fact it can be extremely helpful in relaxing the client and helping them to cope with the emotional side of their illness. Reflexology has also been known to assist with relieving pain. It may be appropriate to apply less pressure or shorten a treatment if the client is very unwell.
How often should I have reflexology?
It is totally safe to have reflexology daily. However, this is not always practical! Clients typically have a weekly treatment to help to relieve particular conditions. Once they feel that their body is balanced, they might move to fortnightly and then monthly sessions for maintenance treatments or purely for relaxation. Other clients have reflexology on an ad hoc basis, as a treat. If you have an acute condition, we would advise you to have reflexology as frequently as possible until your symptoms are alleviated, then revert to a more regular routine.The ideal frequency of treatment will depend on the individual client’s needs. But as a general rule we would recommend having between six and ten weekly treatments.
How does reflexology work?
Reflexology is based on the principle that there are reflexes on the feet and hands that correspond to all organs, glands and parts of the body. A reflexologist uses his or her fingers and thumbs to stimulate these reflexes, promoting balance and relaxation, and improving circulation. For more information, see Healing Hand’s main reflexology page and Blog Articles.
What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?
Donna will require you to answer some questions whilst she fills out a consultation form. Afterward she will begin by asking you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions needing to be addressed, and to determine if massage is appropriate for you. Donna may perform certain assessments and testing to evaluate your condition and to see if you have any presenting complaints. It is important to list all health concerns and medications so that Donna can adapt the session to your specific needs without doing any harm. It is also important to list any allergies so the therapist is aware if he/she needs to use a different oil or lotion during the session.
What do I do during a massage treatment?
Make yourself comfortable. If Donna wants you to adjust your position, she will either move you or will ask you to move what is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It’s up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.
Will the massage hurt?
This depends on the type of massage and the depth of the strokes. A light, relaxing massage that doesn’t probe very deep into the muscles, shouldn’t hurt. With that being said, there is a ‘feels good’ hurt and an ‘ouch, stop it’ hurt. A good massage, even a really deep tissue massage, should always stay in the ‘feels good’ hurt range. Pain can be an indication that the muscle is possibly injured or inflamed and pressure should be adjusted. Also, pain can cause you to tighten up and negate the relaxing effects of the massage. The most effective and deepest massage always works with your body’s natural response, not against it.
How will I feel after my massage treatment?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience a significant decrease or freedom from long-term aches and pains. Many feel a little slowed down for a short period and then notice an increase of energy, heightened awareness and increased productivity which can last for days. If you received a deep massage, you may be slightly sore the next day – much like a good workout at the gym. Sometimes a hot shower, or a soak in the tub can ease this soreness. After your session you should increase your water intake a bit. Just a glass or two more than normal is usually fine. This helps keep your body’s tissues hydrated and healthy.
